Educate and Celebrate visit DLD College London
Elly Barnes MBE, from Educate & Celebrate, visited DLD College London to help support staff and encourage LGBT+ discussion in the curriculum and around the college. Educate & Celebrate is an Ofsted and DFE recognised Best Practice Programme that gives staff, students, parents and governors the confidence and strategies to implement an LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) Inclusive curriculum to successfully eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia from our schools and communities.

Elly’s presentation helped staff to understand terminology and issues which may arise concerning LGBT+ representation in education. When an LGBT+ student comes to DLD College London, they are entering a safe and supportive community which values equality. LGBT+ students will find direct support through their teachers, personal tutors and directors of study, as well as the Director of Welfare. There is also a DLD LGBT+ group where any student can come to discuss LGBT+ issues in a safe, inclusive and friendly environment.

At DLD College London we pride ourselves on treating each student as an individual and encourage students to respect their peers equally. Our Equal Opportunities Policy states:
1.2 The College recognises the benefits of having a diverse community, with individuals who value one another, and the different contributions everyone can make. Students will be taught to value and respect others.

DLD celebrates all students from all walks of life. As a part of the extended support programme for students at DLD, LGBT+ students will find they are supported equally and encouraged to be confident however they choose to identify themselves. Our Mission Statement emphasises the importance of DLD providing a safe learning environment and our LGBT+ friendly community allows a safe environment for students to express themselves.
