Teaching and learning at DLD College London

With mock exams in full swing, and exam season coming up, we wanted to share some advice which we offer our students here at DLD College London, to help manage what can be a stressful time in your academic journey.

Exams can be daunting, but with the right strategies, you can navigate them smoothly and even excel. Whether you’re facing class quizzes, GCSE’s, BTEC coursework or your A Level exams; preparation is key.

Here are some useful exam tips to help students conquer assessments with confidence:

Start Early:

Procrastination can be tempting, but starting early allows you to spread out your study sessions, reducing stress and improving retention. Begin reviewing material well in advance, ideally weeks before the exam date.

Organize Your Study Space:

Create a conducive study environment free from distractions. Keep your study area tidy, well-lit, and stocked with essential materials such as textbooks, notes, and stationery. It’s true what they say – ‘tidy space, tidy mind’.

Understand the Format:

Familiarize yourself with the exam format and structure. Know the types of questions you’ll encounter, whether multiple-choice, essay, short answer, or a combination. Understanding the format helps tailor your study approach. You can use past papers as revision tools.

Review Class Notes Regularly:

Don’t wait until the night before the exam to revisit your notes. Reviewing class materials regularly reinforces learning and prevents cramming. Condense and summarise your notes for easier digestion.

Use Active Learning Techniques:

Engage actively with the material by employing various study techniques such as flashcards, mind maps, and teaching concepts to others. Active learning enhances comprehension and retention. Figure out your own personal study style to find out how you learn best. Resources like this quiz can help.

Practice Past Papers:

Practice makes perfect. Work through past exam papers or sample questions to familiarize yourself with the exam style and identify areas for improvement. Pay attention to recurring themes or topics.

Create a Study Schedule:

Plan your study sessions systematically by creating a study schedule. Allocate specific time slots for each subject or topic, ensuring balanced coverage. Stick to your schedule to maintain consistency.

Take Breaks:

Don’t underestimate the importance of breaks. Schedule regular breaks during study sessions to rest and recharge your mind. Short breaks can improve focus and prevent burnout.

Stay Healthy:

A healthy body supports a healthy mind. Prioritise sleep, nutrition, and exercise during the exam period. Aim for adequate sleep each night to enhance cognitive function and concentration.

Manage Stress:

Exam stress is common, but it’s essential to manage it effectively. Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga to alleviate stress and promote mental well-being.

Seek Help When Needed:

Don’t hesitate to seek help if you’re struggling with any concepts or topics. Reach out to your teachers, classmates, or online resources for clarification and assistance. At DLD, our students have an excellent support network to help them throughout their time here. During exam periods we recommend reaching out to UAT’s, teachers and peers for advice, along with Houseparents, leadership and our wellbeing team for extra pastoral care during this time.

Stay Positive:

Maintain a positive mindset throughout the exam preparation process. Visualise success, stay motivated, and believe in your abilities. Positive thinking can significantly impact performance.

Read Instructions Carefully:

Before starting the exam, carefully read all instructions and questions. Understand what is being asked before providing your answers. Misinterpreting instructions can lead to unnecessary mistakes.

Manage Your Time:

Time management is crucial during exams. Allocate time to each question based on its weightage and difficulty level. Pace yourself accordingly to ensure you complete the exam within the allotted time.

Review Your Answers:

If time permits, review your answers before submitting your exam. Check for any errors, omissions, or areas that need clarification. Editing your responses can help improve accuracy.

By implementing these exam tips, we hope that students can approach their assessments with confidence, competence, and calmness. Remember, preparation is the key to success. Good luck!
