The ‘Cultural Other’ Classics Investigation for Black History Month

3rd November 21

Year 13 Classics students developed posters to highlight the presentation of the cultural ‘Other’ in the Ancient World as part of Black History Month to consider historic cases of enslavement and cultural Otherness.

Ancient Greece was a slave owning society and the plight of slaves is highlighted in a number of sources – Greek Comedy and Tragedy, the epic.

Creating displays which explore the plight of women enslaved by war in the Iliad – the spear bride, the Cultural Other Dido as North African Queen in Aeneid and the presentation of a slave mentality in the Odyssey- these posters are on display in the Classics class room 2.36.
