Sustainability Leads Educate us on Earth Day

22nd April 24

Today, 22nd April is Earth Day and our Sustainability Leads from Student Council spoke in assembly about the celebration and how we can all try to make a conscious effort to be more sustainable.

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held in 1970, Earth Day now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org (formerly Earth Day Network), involving more than 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The day is meant to raise awareness about environmental issues like pollution, deforestation, and global warming, and to encourage action towards sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

For small ways to engage in World Earth Day and sustainability in our community, we can do the following:

  1. Limit our use of plastic, for instance, not using plastic cups at the water station.
  2. We can also ensure we limit the amount of paper we use and instead embrace technological platforms.
  3. Finally, we can check that we’re recycling properly, by putting in the bin only paper, plastics with the recycling triangle, cans, glass and cardboard.

These are examples of things we can do in and around College to help towards DLD’s sustainability goals. However, these are only some examples of what we can do to be more sustainable, and we’ve been told these for years and the problem seems to only worsen, so to find new ways to help and engage in sustainability, visit anthropocenemagazine.org. This website is unique as it gives a more positive outlook on the issue, representing what has been done to aid sustainability instead of what is yet to be done, setting an example for all of us to follow. Other places to check out are organizations like WWF and Greenpeace.

Happy Earth Day!
