Fashion education is often discussed in terms of creativity and craft, but increasingly it is also about understanding the complex ecosystem that surrounds the industry. That was the focus of a recent visit to our Art & Design Department by representatives from Istituto Marangoni London, one of the world’s leading fashion schools.
The visit brought together students and fashion professionals for a day that combined practical skills with broader conversations about the realities of working in the sector. At the centre of the programme was a draping workshop led by Anastasios Roussos, Fashion Studio Manager and Tutor, who introduced students to the techniques designers use to develop silhouettes directly on the mannequin. Working with fabric in three dimensions, students explored the relationship between construction, movement and form — an approach that remains fundamental to luxury fashion houses and contemporary design studios alike.
Alongside the workshop, students heard from Stelios Geros, Programme Leader for BA Fashion Design, and Marco Colombo, Student Recruitment and Admissions Manager. Their discussion moved beyond the studio to examine the changing landscape of fashion education and the wider industry, addressing topics such as creative development, entrepreneurship, branding and the diverse career pathways available to emerging designers.
For students considering futures in fashion, the session offered a valuable glimpse into an industry that demands both creative vision and commercial awareness. It also highlighted the increasingly important role of collaboration between schools, universities and industry professionals in preparing the next generation of talent.
The Art & Design Department extends its thanks to Stelios Geros, Marco Colombo and Anastasios Roussos for sharing their expertise and insights. Their visit provided students with an opportunity not only to refine their technical skills, but also to better understand the evolving realities of fashion as a global creative industry .
