Great Expectations

11th December 15

DLD College London A Level Drama Production of Great Expectations

DLD Fringe (ECA Drama Club) were very excited to produce their first Christmas Production in the new building. They performed an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic work ‘GREAT EXPECTATIONS’ on the 8th, 9th and 10th December. The show had a cast of 21 students who transformed the Atrium atmospherically into the cobwebbed abode of Miss Havisham. The cast was drawn from all subject areas in the college and it was a truly international venture! Some of the most atmospheric moments were created by a strong chorus of actors who became a train, a forge, a gate, a cell, fire, gamblers, barn dancers and waltzers at a society ball. The beauty of the piece was its ensemble feel, everyone working together to shape a moving emotional experience laced with hints of comedy, emerging from the character choices made by the cast. The music was composed specially by Peter Hopkins and played beautifully on violin and piano, interspersing scenes and building a tapestry of sound to enhance the action.

Congratulations to all the students on their fantastic performances, despite having a limited number of rehearsals, the spirit of the cast was phenomenal and we were encouraged by the students’ application to the challenge.

Director of the play and Drama tutor Chris Chambers commented: “I was honoured to have the opportunity to direct the inaugural production which was attended by Baroness Perry and seen by all students and staff. A festive experience that being part of was its own reward. I am looking forward to the next one!”
