2nd November 26
Throughout October, DLD marked Black History Month with a dedicated Art exhibition celebrating the creativity, achievements, and cultural contributions of black creative artists.
Inspired by the richness and diversity of black artistic expression, the exhibition explores themes of identity, heritage, representation and belonging. Through the work of influential artists including Jean-Michel Basquiat, Hurvin Anderson, Frank Bowling, Deborah Roberts, Chris Ofili and the late, playwright Bonnie Greer. We invited our school community to reflect on the stories, perspectives and ideas that shape our understanding of the world.
At DLD, we believe that art has the power to challenge perspectives, inspire curiosity and bring people together. These values are central to our college ethos: tolerance, respect, academic curiosity, community, and kindness. By engaging with the work of these artists, we encourage our students to embrace different viewpoints, question assumptions, and celebrate the diversity that enriches our college community.
This exhibition is more than a celebration of artistic excellence; it is an opportunity to recognise the voices and histories that have formed, and continue to shape, our shared cultural landscape. We invite our students, staff and wider community to explore, reflect and be inspired. We would like to extend our special thanks to Mr Michael Whitfield for his thoughtful and creative curation of the exhibition, bringing the display to life and helping us celebrate the richness and diversity of Black History Month.
