On 16 October DLD College London A level Year 1 Art students explored The National Gallery collection of the Sainsbury Wing, learned about the use of art materials in Gothic art and how paintings were created at this time. They attended the exciting workshop where they learned to work in gold leaf and how egg tempera was made. Each student copied a detail of one of the paintings in The Sainsbury Wing, applied the gold leaf in the chosen sections, and made their own egg tempera paints which they used to paint it. They thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.
One of the students, Lilly Mae, commented: ‘I particularly enjoyed the gold leaf painting! We were lucky to be presented with this opportunity as this is a technique rarely practiced nowadays.’
