Bigger Picture Society – Black Representation

30th April 21

This week in the Bigger Picture Society, Head of School Jessica facilitated an excellent seminar – ‘Black Representation, are we doing it wrong?’.

The seminar delved in detail into very pertinent sources for debate, such as Black History Month. Is it really an indicator of progress, or just a tokenistic symbol? Another issue tackled was the lack of Black History in the national curriculum outside of black trauma. Finally, Jessica tackled the issue of Black representation in the Media, detailing the various tropes and stereotypes seen in Hollywood, as well as colourism, and the ingrained preference towards lighter complexions in media.
