Helen O’Hara, freelance journalist and Editor at Large of Empire magazine, which is one of the most popular movie magazines in the world, led a fascinating workshop on film journalism and writing film reviews.
Helen provided the students with some great advice about structure and content. She explained that writing a review is similar to constructing an argument on a debate team. You need to think about the position you want to take and then create an argument that supports that position. She encouraged the students to break the picture down into its component parts, like cinematography, writing, acting, and think about what stands out. They can they use these elements to support their argument.
John Branney, Head of Film and Media, added: “It is really amazing that Helen has given up her time to share her experiences with the students and inspire the journalists of the future. Her enthusiasm for her subject is infectious and the students loved hearing her thoughts on movies and writing about them. This will be a great foundation for the new weekly watch feature for Film Club where students are being encouraged to write and publish reviews”.
