Lights! Camera! Action! No, I am not on the set of the new Star Wars movie but inspired by the talk given by Lord Chris Smith this week, who spoke to our Film and Media students about the future of the British Film industry. It was interesting to hear about how our movie going habits have changed over the years and how they will continue to do so with the rise of on-line platforms (YouTube, Netflix et al) who will further disrupt the market.
Our students posed some in depth questions to Lord Smith, who is currently Master of Pembroke College Cambridge and we look forward to welcoming him back to College soon. He will always be remembered for his policy on free entry to museums which still exists today and for which we are very grateful for. It has helped many access culture in a way that they couldn’t have in the past.
DLD College is a hive of activity with countless revision sessions, exams and students buried in their books. After half term, the students will be completely immersed in public exams and we wish them well in their endeavors as they pursue coveted university places, gap years and internships come August. The half term break although a welcome respite from the pressure and demands of College life, will also be an opportunity to make sure that one is fully prepared for the inevitable. I thank our students (namely the Y13 and Y14s) for the outstanding service they have given to the College this year. From music, art and drama productions, to a variety of sports teams and to the student council for setting the gold standard to the younger members of our community. I hope they have learnt a little bit about themselves and the world around them, and use the education they have received here at DLD to make the world a better place. I am sure Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie will agree with me.
I wish you all a peaceful half term.
Best wishes,
Irfan Latif
