Student Council, The London Marathon, & International Day

Last week the weather was stunning, culminating in a glorious weekend on the coast with our new Student Council (more about that below) and the internationally recognised event, The London Marathon (the hottest on record) which went past our iconic building. Alas the weather this week has not been so great and we have reverted back to typical British weather, cold and wet. However, spirits haven’t been dampened here with a brilliant celebration of International Day on Monday. Here students proudly talked about their countries with other students and staff. It was a great occasion, highlighting the core values of tolerance and respect, which are so important to us here at the College.

To celebrate International Day the Refectory put on a veritable feast that day showcasing the quality and variety of the College’s extensive menu and how it endeavors to cater for all tastes (though I do need to watch my waist line!).

This afternoon we learnt that the leaders of North and South Korea have agreed to work to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons after holding a historic summit. It was encouraging to see the North’s Kim Jong-un and Moon Jae-in of South Korea talking with a shared common purpose, to bring peace to the region. The Winter Olympics, I believe, was a catalyst to this development and the two leaders have also agreed to push towards turning the armistice that ended the Korean War in 1953 into a peace treaty this year. We are seeing history being made today before our very eyes and the core values of tolerance and respect highlighted on a global scale. I hope that this historic meeting is a watershed moment for other leaders to put aside their differences and work together to bring about peace on this planet. We can only hope that they do and that the next generation will continue to do this, leaving behind a strong legacy The College mission is ‘Developing the next generation of Leaders to take up their place in a challenging and diverse world’. I hope that we do that, come rain or shine.
