Remembrance Day at DLD

11th November 24

At DLD, Remembrance Day is observed with deep respect and reflection each year. Serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals in times of war and conflict. This year, the school’s Remembrance Day commemorations included a meaningful trip to The Cenotaph in Whitehall; the chief national war memorial for the First and Second World Wars and subsequent conflicts.  A timely visit for our Year Nine students to the Imperial War Museum in London, included fostering a profound sense of historical awareness and empathy among the students.

Teachers, staff, students, and local veterans donned the red poppy, listening attentively to The Last Post, and watching the laying of the wreaths. As the clock struck eleven, the school joined the nation in observing a two-minute silence. The atmosphere was one of respect and contemplation as everyone, young and old, reflected on the bravery of those who fought and gave their lives for peace.

In addition to the collective ceremony at The Cenotaph, Year Nine students were privileged to visit the Imperial War Museum as part of their history curriculum. This trip was designed to deepen their understanding of war’s impact and the importance of remembrance. Among the various exhibitions, the “First World War Galleries” particularly resonated with students, offering an immersive experience into the lives of soldiers and civilians alike. These galleries provide a comprehensive look at the Great War, displaying personal letters, uniforms, and artifacts that tell poignant stories from the trenches to the home front. Students were struck by the letters and diaries from young soldiers not much older than themselves, who wrote of bravery, fear, and the deep bonds formed in adversity.

Within the college, our thanks to teachers Greg Slysz and Cathy David for proving insightful and profound displays for all our students to engage with throughout the Atrium. DLD’s Remembrance Day events highlight the commitment of the school community to honouring the past and educating future generations about the importance of peace and empathy.
