Digital Innovators, Question Time & Chinese New Year

The cold weather here somewhat resembles that at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang where last weekend we witnessed another Super Saturday with 3 gold medals won in as many hours – a tremendous feat on all accounts and I hope inspires our students to ‘carpe diem’ and seize those numerous opportunities available to them. One such opportunity is being on the influential Student Council at DLD – applications are now being accepted for these prestigious positions where our Heads of College and Student Ambassadors will have a say in the running of the college and will be able to support, develop and deliver the new vision. I strongly urge them to apply as being on the Student Council will help them foster those skills which are so important in today’s economy.
Our Digital Innovators, Tia and Maria, were very impressive this week – having put me through my paces as they interviewed me as part of the ‘Principal’s Question Time’ initiative, which all our students were involved in. They delivered, with great aplomb and energy, an informative assembly on being safe on the internet. Educating our students to be responsible while they surf the internet and interact on social media is again important in today’s economy as they start building and developing their digital footprint. This has now become just as important as a CV, so hopefully important lessons were learnt this week. We also celebrated Chinese New Year (Year of the Dog) on Monday with a number of exquisite performances by our boarders in the Atrium followed by a traditional hearty Chinese supper – a great occasion bringing together communities where our values of tolerance, respect and kindness shone through. Speaking of communities, we wish all our charity runners the very best of luck as they brave the chilly conditions tomorrow morning to run circles round the Olympic Park in Stratford as they raise vital funds for our local charity, the Evelina Children’s Hospital, based next door at St Thomas’. On that medical note, we bid farewell today to our College Nurse, Mrs Clare Ellwood, who after some 3 and a half years of sterling service will be moving on to Harrow School to manage their Health Centre – she will no doubt be missed by us all and we wish her the very best for the future.
