The BTEC qualification offers a hands-on approach to study and differs from A-Levels because it offers more of a practical focus for study. With BTEC Media Production, it is more like working for a small production company than engaging in traditional study. BTEC qualifications allow you to specialise in one particular field of study so you don’t have to choose three separate subjects, you just choose one. In Media Production, you only study media! That means you gain a greater understanding of the subject whilst being able to demonstrate your learning in a way that suits you.
Rather than sitting an exam at the end of the year you are assessed through the coursework that you produce. The BTEC Media Production course offers a variety of different assignments, from filming and editing music videos, magazine production and radio production. The real advantage of the qualification is that it offers you a greater degree of choice in how you want to be assessed. Rather than writing an essay, you can choose to submit your work as a podcast or as a short video. There will be essay writing involved but you have a greater level of control over what you want to write. The course runs for two years and is the equivalent of three full A-Levels. Most Universities will recognise BTEC qualifications but of course the field of study that you choose should be linked to the course that you are studying.
