25th June 25
This week we hosted a University Day, providing students with invaluable insights into higher education and future career pathways. The event was designed to empower students as they begin thinking more seriously about their next steps and to help them make informed decisions about university applications and subject choices.
Throughout the day, students met with University Admissions Tutors (UATs) and education advisors, who offered tailored guidance on university routes into a wide range of fields—from medicine and business to law, the creative arts, and beyond. Sessions focused on what makes a strong application, how to research course options effectively, and ways students can get ahead over the summer, including work experience, super-curricular activities, and independent learning.
A particular highlight was the opportunity to hear from representatives of the University of Essex and Royal Holloway, University of London, who delivered engaging presentations on how to craft compelling personal statements. They shared expert advice on articulating subject passion, showcasing academic strengths, and avoiding common pitfalls—supporting students in creating standout applications that reflect their individuality and aspirations.
Head of Universities, Daniel Woodley, commented:
“University Day is always a key date in our calendar. It’s part of our commitment to ensuring every student is not only well-prepared for university, but also inspired by the possibilities that lie ahead. We want our students to leave with both clarity and confidence about their futures.”
The day forms part of a broader university programme at DLD, designed to equip students with the knowledge, experiences, and tools needed to thrive in life after college. In September, DLD will play host to our Annual University Fair with nearly 40 universities from across the country in attendance, giving our students first-hand insight into the courses and options available to them. An International University Fair follows this, whilst students have constant support from their UATs throughout the academic year as they prepare their UCAS applications.
