Media Studies
What is Media Studies?
The course is designed to teach you about all the media forms currently available to us - print and electronic publishing, moving image, radio and web-based technologies - so that you will appreciate and understand the media and its role in our daily lives.
What will I study?
You will investigate a wide variety of media products over the period of the course - analysing and evaluating them in terms of the way they communicate a message to an audience and also how they are sold to specific audiences. You will also be given the opportunity to create your own media products, following a series of pre-set briefs.
How is it assessed?
Unit One: Investigating The Media is a written paper based around a pre-set topic area with guidance and stimulus
Unit Two: Understanding the Media involves a mix of coursework assignments and a practical assignment, all done under controlled conditions.
What do I need?
The most important attribute you can bring to the Media Studies classroom is an interest in some of the many different media forms available. Are you an avid cinema goer? Do you read newspapers? Play video games? Wonder how they are produced, who produces them and how we get to be aware that they exist? If so Media Studies is probably for you.
