The standard this year was one of the best ever. Performing is nerve-racking in itself, but being recorded and subsequently examined on that recording takes it to another level. So what we have here are highlights from this concert which I hope you will enjoy. I wish the students every success in their forthcoming examinations.

Welcome to Thebes

The DLD Youth Theatre embarks upon their latest adventure by returning to the classics but in a modern retelling by Moira Buffini. Welcome to Thebes takes a stack of Greek stories, familiar from the tragedies, and gives them a 21st-century twist worthy of a head-spinning theme-park ride. The names of some of the characters may ring reassuring classical bells – Eurydice, Antigone, Theseus, Tiresias – but the context is deliberately, disorientatingly jarring. With promenade staging and an ambitious mix of live theatre and film, this promises to be a DLD event not to miss.

LAMDA Success

The Drama Department is proud to announce this year’s results for the candidates taking LAMDA acting examinations. We are not only delighted that all of the students have been awarded their medals, but for the first time, DLD can boast 4 Gold Medal winners in one sitting: this is of enormous credit to the students as they invest their own time and energies into the LAMDA curriculum that runs alongside their A level studies. Congratulations to all and may the flames of creativity burn bright in your summer sanctuary.

Just because it is a written examination, we don’t let that hold back our students creativity: here, in the Drama department at DLD, we try to ignite the students imagination at all times and this is one of our A2 group’s responses to the challenge to produce a trailer for their imagined production of Georg Buchner’s ‘Woyzeck’. Please be warned that the film does include flashing images.
